RESEARCH REPORT: European Audiovisual Observatory publishes new report on state aid for digital cinema
The last twelve months have seen successive Hollywood 3D blockbusters (Avatar, Up, Alice in Wonderland) taking cinema fairly and squarely into the digital age.

While there is no doubt that these films have been largely responsible for an upswing in the number of digital cinemas in Europe, their success has also heightened concern among smaller cinema operators, for whom the costs of digital conversion may be prohibitive.

Linked to this issue is the fear that European films will be "squeezed out" of many cinemas by a tide of US 3D blockbusters.
Ballantyne Strong reported financial results
Largely reflecting an increase in digital cinema equipment sales, net revenues rose 48% to $25.3 million in Q1 2010 from net revenues of $17.1 million in Q1 2009.

Q1 2010 sales of digital cinema equipment rose 137% to $13.8 million from $5.9 million in Q1 2009. The significant increase reflects growing demand for digital projection systems in the Americas and Asia, primarily in China.
